|The Front Bottoms 2014-05-21
THE FRONT BOTTOMS RELEASE ROSE EP On Tour This Summer with Say Anything Hitting the Festival Circuit with Reading, Leeds, Bestival and Riot Fest "These are the songs that people ask for when we’re on tour," says vocalist/guitarist Brian Sella of THE FRONT BOTTOMS, about their new six-track ROSE EP (Bar/None Records; release date June 17, 2014). "They're songs that we've either played live at shows or had kicking around that we couldn't let go of." A collection of some of the best tracks of their career so far, many of the tracks on Rose will once again be road-tested when the band hits the touring circuit with a continental trek throughout the US and Canada as direct support of Say Anything this summer (tour dates below) as well as hitting the festival circuit with Reading Festival (UK), Leeds Festival (UK), Bestival (UK) and Riot Fest (Chicago, IK) all confirmed for later this Summer. Named after drummer Mathew Uychich's grandmother Rosemary, Rose marks the first in a series of EPs named after their grandmothers which they plan on releasing in the future. "These songs were also Mat's grandmother Rosemary's favorite songs," he explains. "So it was kinda fitting that we named this EP Rose." Launching the CD with the crowd pleaser "Flying Model Rockets," it kicks off with an epic and bombastic bang. Epic and conversational, the track propels listeners through their trademark clever lyrics have started massive sing-alongs at their live shows. "Lipstick Covered Magnet" and "Be Nice To Me" continue the punk thematics while the moody and introspective "Awkward Conversations" projects the tension of a relationship on the verge of collapse. The immediate smiling infectiousness of "12 Feet Deep" posits the story right in the middle of that precarious time between high school and college when kids have to confront a wider world. The teaser track/lyric video "Jim Bogart" puts Brian in the unenviable position of pining for a girl who doesn't reciprocate his feelings and can be viewed here: http://youtu.be/5rdkSb3K0LE. Formed in Northern Jersey, The Front Bottoms grew organically throughout the underground and made major headway into the mainstream. With local and national press like Alternative Press, BrooklynVegan, VICE, Filter, All Music Guide, DRUM Magazine, SPIN, Aquarian Weekly, Jersey Beat, MTV, Billboard, Huffington Post, and many others driving donuts around them, they even found major believers in Bob Boilen of NPR who has been a huge supporter since day one and has branded them "…A great rock ‘n’ roll band". Their Tiny Desk concert can be seen here: http://www.npr.org/event/music/212372673/the-front-bottoms-tiny-desk-concert. The Front Bottoms is Brian Sella (vocals/guitar), Mathew Uychich (drums), Tom Warren (bass), and Ciaran O’Donnel (keys/trumpet/guitar). Rose EP will be released on Bar/None Records on June 17, 2014. Clouded Staircase was re-released on Bar/None August 19th and is available everywhere.
Relix had this to say about Clouded Staircase.
The Wall Street Journal had this to say about the album. "On Clouded Staircase, some songs have 10 vocal parts, most sung by Mr. Dillon, that form a tight, textured and often captivating whole. Rich but uncluttered orchestral pop with reoccurring themes and a few tracks that are crafted of separate but complementary parts, the CD shows the influence of "Smile," especially on the Dillon composition "Camp-Fire" as voices dart and built over organ, chimes, bass and banjo. But the album's "Death to Bad Dreams/Black Parade" invokes the Beatles' harmonies, and "She Goes Through Phases" recalls Pink Floyd's. The sway of the '70s band 10cc jumps from several tracks.

"Allow me to go out on a limb and say this: Firecracker People might be the best album you haven't heard this year. Of course, such statements are entirely subjective and rather silly if you get down to it (the entire process of judging art seems to be an idea in tension), but that doesn't stop me from trying to get you to pay attention to the music of Darren Jessee (among others). - STEREO SUBVERSION

Joe's Pub in the Park
David Driver sings the songs of Scott Walker, easily the most respected and least known artist of his generation. Walker, the enigmatic and influential subject of the soon-to-be-released documentary film 30 Century Man, is ripe for re-discovery and downtown chanteur David Driver (seen alongside Deborah Harry and Elvis Costello in Roy Nathanson's Fire at Keaton's Bar and Grill and as a regular vocalist with the Losers' Lounge) is the singer for the job. Walker's gritty glam lyrics, passionate crooning and Dada arrangements are late-twentieth-century music's road not taken; the streetwise luster and gravity of Driver's voice make him uniquely qualified to resurrect these urban songs. The songbook includes the classics "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore," "Montague Terrace (In Blue)," "It's Raining Today," and the inimitable "Thanks for Chicago, Mr. James."
